Diabetes Management in the Twenty-First Century

Keep your Disease under Control with Diabetes Management Software

The treatment of diabetes has been one of the more successful medical initiates of the last century. Increases in knowledge about the mechanism of the disease, new medications, new testing technologies, and promising cutting edge research have shown us that there is hope that one day diabetes will join the ranks of polio, bubonic plague, and syphilis as an eradicated scourge. Until that time comes, it is important to keep up with the day to day tasks involved in diabetes management.

Current diabetes treatments have taken advantage of advances in modern electrical and computer engineering perhaps more than the treatments of any other disease. Diabetes management and testing devices such as digital blood glucose meters can return results in seconds and can also store results for a week or more depending on model. Some glucose monitors can even interface with personal computers to keep track of glucose levels in order to determine a historical baseline. Insulin pumps are essentially wearable computers that use this historical baseline to control the release of insulin through a catheter at regular intervals throughout the day. Future insulin pumps will likely be even more advanced, combining the duties of both a standard insulin pump as well as a blood glucose meter.  This device, known as a closed loop insulin pump, would make diabetes management nearly effortless.

Given the amount of technological innovation that has gone into diabetes management in recent years, it is no surprise that many diabetics have been assisted in their diabetes management regimen by diabetes management software. Diabetes management software can take disparate pieces of diabetes management data (glucose levels correlated with time of day correlated with sugar content consumed, etc.) and can provide views of data that are simply not possible using pen and paper or simpler computerized diabetes management practices, such as the use of spreadsheets. Diabetes management software can make the diabetes management regimen more effective by letting the patient and his or her health care provider understand how blood glucose levels vary with a number of different factors.

Most diabetes software packages interface with digital glucose meters and provide a graphical user interface (GUI) for adding annotations and comments. Some diabetes management software will alert you (and may even text message or email your physician) if it notices any alarming trends. Most diabetes management software can analyze your glucose readings and suggest variations in diet and/or exercise to improve the numbers. Of course, you should always talk with your physician before modifying your diabetes management regimen.

Diabetes management software is yet another example of how diabetes management has taken full advantage of the computer revolution. While there is no substitute for diligent testing and adherence to a diabetes management regimen, diabetes management software can provide that little extra bit of help that could mean the difference between wellness and illness.
