Diabetes Treatment

Diabetes is a disease that is found throughout the world. Millions of individuals are affected by this disease. It is diagnosed with imbalance in insulin levels, and may lead to future health risks. For diabetes treatment, there are dozens of methods available. But as individual cases vary, one cannot go on taking a drug that treats this disease for all. Thus, one can say that the treatment of diabetes is highly individualized. In fact, the difference in the types of diabetes one is diagnosed with also plays a part in the difference in its treatment.

Consult a doctor

After being diagnosed with the diabetes type that you are suffering from, the doctor prescribes the related diabetes treatment. A doctor is the person who sets the goals for a change in the lifestyle and controlling blood sugar levels to treat it. But a patient’s knowledge of diabetes is of utmost importance, if one is to go for the diabetes treatment. The treatment of two of the most common diabetes types is discussed below.

Follow prescriptions

For patients suffering from Type 1 diabetes, an injection of insulin is prescribed. This injection is often prescribed to be taken on daily basis. Normally, a combination of Aspart insulin, Lispro or regular is prescribed, which works as a short acting insulin injection. Other than this combination, a patient suffering from Type 1 diabetes can also be given a diabetes treatment of long acting insulin injections viz. Glargine, Lente, Ultralente or Determir. The most important point of insulin intake is that you should take the drug, directly into the blood. Oral intake of such kind of medication is to be avoided, as may lead to lowering its efficacy by the time it reaches the stomach.

Individuals suffering from Type 2 diabetes are first diagnosed with what is known as an increase in the level of blood sugar and glycosylated haemoglobin. You may even be able to minimize the blood sugar level naturally, without the introduction of any drug. Hence, it is seen whether the individual can minimize it that way before starting any diabetes treatment with the help of medication.

Existing treatments

At first, diabetes treatment starts with a weight loss program. This treatment is normally tried for 3-6 months, depending upon your blood sugar level. After the procedure, it is determined whether with this method, you were able to minimize glycosylated haemoglobin or not. If the level remains the same as before, you are prescribed oral drugs like Sulfonylurea or Biguanide (metformin).

Live healthy

Diabetes treatment should also be coupled with a healthy diet pattern and weight loss program, especially if you are overweight. A doctor may even prescribe a combination of drugs to get you out of it. But even after the intake of such medicines, one may require to resort to insulin injections in later stages. Thus, the management of the disease is the only available option to fight it.
