Recognizing the Symptoms of Diabetes

Diabetes is a serious medical condition that can lead to complications such as poor circulation, eye problems and heart attacks. The onset of diabetes can occur at any age. However, the symptoms of diabetes are often subtle and go unnoticed for some time. In fact, it’s estimated that approximately six million people in the United States are undiagnosed with diabetes.

Symptoms of diabetes vary for each person. Some people are familiar with common symptoms, such as a tingling sensation in the hands and feet, slow healing bruises and perhaps blurred vision. But these aren’t the only symptoms for diabetes, and it is important for anyone with a family history of diabetes to recognize other early signs.

There are a few tell-tale signs of early diabetes. These include unusual thirst or being thirsty despite frequent consumption of water and other beverages. The need to urinate more often is another sign, as well as feeling unusually tired after eating a meal. An increase in hunger level or appetite can also indicate early diabetes. Additionally, symptoms for diabetes might include gaining or losing a significant amount of weight without changing eating habits or activity levels.

Ignoring the diabetes symptoms can have life-threatening consequences, and it’s imperative to have any usual symptoms examined by a physician.
