Predicting Type 2 Diabetes in Childhood

In a news story on CBS News Online today, a study from The Journal of Pediatrics indicated that it may be possible to predict which are the most likely children to develop type 2 diabetes…..

A new study focuses on 2 key factors:

1. Watch for type 2 diabetes risk factors beginning in childhood.

2. Manage weight for a lifetime.

The aim is to take care of a condition called metabolic syndrome, which can lead to type 2 diabetes. People with metabolic syndrome have at least three of these problems:

1. Large waist

2.Above-normal blood pressure

3.Above-normal blood sugar (glucose) after fasting

4. Above-normal triglycerides (a type of fat in the blood) after fasting

5. Below-normal HDL ("good") cholesterol

Regular exercise and a healthy diet, can make all of those problems less likely. At all ages, being overweight made metabolic syndrome more applicable and overweight kids often became overweight adults.
