A short snippet of diabetes definition would be beneficial before discussing its different types. It is a persistent condition of high blood glucose (sugar) level. As the human body relies on blood glucose for energy, this disease can hinder the normal functioning of the body. There are mainly three types of diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes or insulin dependent diabetes mellitus:

It is the type of diabetes, in which the production of insulin by the body is non-existent. It is caused by the destruction of the autoimmune system, which creates insulin in the pancreas. This sort of diabetes can occur during childhood. However, that does not mean it cannot occur at any other age.

Type 2 diabetes or non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus:
It is the type of diabetes, in which the body produces inadequate levels of insulin or does not work effectively on the body. This kind of diabetes is more commonly associated with individuals over the age of 40. However, age is not a determining factor for it to occur. It may also be due to an individual’s obesity.

Gestational diabetes mellitus

There is no upright treatment for getting a diabetic patient out of it, but this disease can definitely be managed. The following are some of the ways through which diabetes Type 2, the most common type of diabetes, can be managed.

  • Right food habits
  • Overcoming excessive weight
  • Being physically energetic
  • Getting rid of smoking habits
  • Keeping blood sugar under control
  • Testing blood sugar levels frequently if an individual sees some symptoms of the disease

Some symptoms related to each type of diabetes are:

  • Frequent thirst
  • Increase in hunger
  • Drowsiness and fatigue
  • Frequent need for urination
  • Excess weight loss or gain
  • Blurred vision
  • Menstrual irregularity
  • Skin rashes or sores that heal slowly

Lifestyle based

Diabetes is considered to be more hereditary by nature, but in more than 90 per cent of the cases, it has been observed that it is diabetes Type 2, with which patients are affected. As Type 2 diabetes is due to one’s lifestyle, one can take precautions not to get it. As of now, both kinds of diabetes have no remedy. Therefore, one must know that the only way to stay away from diabetes is to take care of one’s health and lifestyle.
